The Craigmyle Cheese Company of Torphins has been short listed in two prestigious food competitions in the 'most successful product of 2006' categories for its Wummle cheese -The Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards to be announced on the 14th March and The Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards which will be announced on 10th May.
Set up in December 2005, The Craigmyle Cheese Company went on to win seven awards in its first year of operation including a Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards (Dairy), two gold medals at The Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards and a British Cheese Award.
"2006 was a fantastic year for us" commented Liz Marchant who owns the business along with her husband, Neil. "I don’t think either of us could have foreseen the level of success and recognition that we would achieve in our first year of business. We are very proud of our products and our small team and delighted that our cheese has been so well received by the marketplace."
Wummle is a soft cheese with a bloomy white mould similar to a Camembert. It is made with unpasteurised organic cows' milk from Glasgoforrest farm in Aberdeenshire. The cheese is available to buy from delicatessens and farm shops all over Scotland and a number of outlets in England. The cheese is also featured on the cheeseboard of some of the most prestigious venues in Scotland such as Gleneagles, The Balmoral Hotel and Cameron House. It is also available to purchase at Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh.
