8/03/2006 The Craigmyle Cheese Company, a new north east business making handmade, organic, artisan cheese is one of the more unusual finalists in the 2006 Grampian Awards for Business Enterprise. The Torphins based business, which started trading in December 2005 is one of three finalists in the New Business Award Category. The winner, who will be announced at the awards ceremony at Ardoe House Hotel on 8 June 2006, will receive a coveted enterprise award and a cheque for £3,000. The New Business category recognises businesses that have been trading for less than one year and have demonstrated the potential to develop into a dynamic business of the future. Based in Royal Deeside and run by husband and wife team, Neil and Liz Marchant, The Craigmyle Cheese Company uses local unpasteurised cows’ milk to make three distinctive cheeses. Liz comments “The trend for good quality local food is certainly apparent in the north east. Since we opened the business at the end of 2005 it has gone from strength to strength with orders from all over Scotland and, more recently, England. Demand for our cheeses outstripped our initial expectations and it was necessary for us to fast track our recruitment plans; we now employ two part time cheese makers and a delivery driver.” Having already won two gold medals at the Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards and been named as a finalist in the Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards, The Craigmyle Cheese Company will this time be up against two other north east businesses, TLG Builders of Natural Stone and Capture Imaging. Liz continues, “When Neil and I decided to start our own business it made perfect sense for us to base the business on something that we are both passionate about – good food. We secured grants from the Scottish Executive and Aberdeenshire Council which went towards building and equipping a purpose built creamery and funding marketing materials. We wanted to use traditional methods and local ingredients to produce high quality cheeses. We currently produce three handcrafted cheeses, Clachnaben, Morven and Wummle, all named after local landmarks or Doric words. In time we plan to expand the range of cheeses that we produce.” Stuart Heslop, Director of Commercial Banking for RBS in Aberdeen, says “The Grampian Awards for Business Enterprise showcase the diverse range of successful businesses in the north east and prove that entrepreneurs in the north east are adept at responding to the changing needs of the market; an important skill in today’s challenging business landscape.”
