Handmade cheese business launches in Royal Deeside

A small, specialist business producing handmade cheeses using traditional methods has opened its doors for business in Torphins, Aberdeenshire.

The Craigmyle Cheese Company has been set up by husband and wife team, Liz and Neil Marchant who have lived in the village for the past five years. From their small purpose-built creamery on the outskirts of Torphins, the couple have started to produce and sell two different types of cheeses called Wummle, a soft mould ripened cheese, and Clachnaben, a Caerphilly style `crumbly, using organic, unpasteurised milk from local dairies at Newton Dee and Kinnellar.

"We are both passionate about good food”, explained Liz Marchant who also runs her own public relations business; “We love eating cheese and began to get interested in making it ourselves about two years ago. We visited a number of cheesemakers in Scotland and also went on several courses then started seriously planning our business.

Scotland, and particularly Aberdeenshire, does not boast many cheesemakers when compared to England, Wales and Ireland so we felt that there was an opportunity to put Royal Deeside on the cheese map! It has been a lot of hard work, effort and long working days, particularly as we both have other jobs as well, but we are delighted at how the cheese has been received the phone is ringing off the hook.”

In addition to investing their own capital in the business, Liz and Neil expressed their gratitude for the help that they had received from the Scottish Executive in the form of a Processing and Marketing grant, Aberdeenshire Council for its Support for Aberdeenshire Business scheme, Enterprise North East Trust and the Clydesdale Bank in Banchory for their business support.

The cheeses are currently available to buy at Cairn Gourmet in Banchory and The Millers at Midmar and are being served at The CandlestickMaker in Aboyne, The Milton of Crathes, Dudleys in Banchory, Pittodrie House Hotel and The Queens Head in Little Marlowe, Buckinghamshire.

The Craigmyle Cheese Company is a member of the Slow Food Movement and is in the process of being assessed for Soil Association accreditation.
