First British Cheese medal for Deeside cheesemaker

A young Aberdeenshire cheesemaking business has proved it is amongst the best of British cheesemakers by winning a medal at this year's British Cheese Awards which were held in Cheltenham over the weekend.

The Craigmyle Cheese Company of Torphins, which only started trading less than a year ago, was awarded the accolade for its Morven, a semi-soft organic cheese handmade with unpasteurised Aberdeenshire cows' milk.

Liz and Neil Marchant, owners of the business who attended the awards ceremony said: "Morven is the latest cheese to be introduced to our small artisan range of three. We make relatively small batches of this cheese so it can be difficult to get hold of but it is becoming increasingly popular. As a new business in our first year of operation, this is the first year that we have entered these national awards and we are just so pleased to be amongst the medal winners as the standard is so very high."

This year the competition, which is the highlight of cheesemakers' calendar, had 842 cheeses from 178 cheesemakers throughout the British Isles.

The medal comes hot on the heels of a number of awards received by The Craigmyle Cheese Company in 2006 including winning the Scottish Food & Drink Excellence Awards (Dairy), two gold medals in the Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards, a silver and a bronze at The Royal Highland Show and a bronze and a `commended' at The Nantwich International Show.
