New Deeside organic business reaches final of Grampian Food Awards.
The recently established Craigmyle Cheese Company of Torphins has been confirmed as a finalist in the 16th annual Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards 2006.
The Craigmyle Cheese Company has entered its popular `Wummle cheese into the retail product sector for small businesses. The news comes hot on the heels of the Company receiving accreditation from The Soil Association which demonstrates a commitment to producing organic produce.
Owners of The Craigmyle Cheese Company, husband and wife team, Liz and Neil Marchant were delighted to hear the news that they had reached the finals. Liz commented: We are just thrilled that the cheese has been so well received in such a short space of time. We only started producing just before Christmas and we have worked hard to create a cheese that we love to eat it appears that lots of other people agree with us which is fantastic! We have expanded very quickly since we started the company and now have two cheesemaking assistants and a delivery man to cope with ongoing demand for the product.
Wummle is now being stocked by delicatessens, speciality food shops, restaurants and hotels all over Aberdeenshire and as far afield as Orkney, Edinburgh and England. The cheese is a soft, mould-ripened variety similar to a Camembert and is made from unpasteurised, organic milk from Aberdeenshire. The name is a Doric word meaning `to turn which is what cheesemakers do as they ripen this type of cheese.
From its small Creamery in Torphins, the Craigmyle Cheese Company also produces two other cheeses; Clachnaben which is a mild crumbly and Morven which is like a Bel Paese texture. | | |
